Today I went in for another hand rehabilitation appointment. This is my 3rd appointment and I have shown continued improvement. I am impressed with the level of care I am receiving here in New Zealand.
Here is my progress so far:
Visit 1
Passive Range of Motion: 27 degrees
Active Range of Motion: 16 degrees
Pressing On Scale: 20 kg
Visit 2
Passive Range of Motion: 35 degrees
Active Range of Motion: 19 degrees
Pressing On Scale: 34 kg
Visit 3 (Today)
Passive Range of Motion: 43 degrees!!!
Active Range of Motion: 19 degrees
Pressing On Scale: 41 kg
So as you can see, great progress on the Passive ROM where I can use my body weight for leverage. This has proven beneficial in my overall fitness - I just had a new post injury personal record on my hang clean at 130 kg. It felt pretty solid and my wrist almost allowed me to get into a full rack position. I also was able to put together some decent strict hand stand push-ups.
My greatest limitation is Active ROM. We are going to make some improvements here with 2 new exercises - Extending a Fist and Towel Wringing. Not sure exactly how many degrees I will be able to improve, but if I can get 2 or 3 degrees improvement in 3 weeks I will be happy. A little improvement in active ROM could equate to long term benefit in wrist stability and overall strength.
It has been almost one year since the injury and I can honestly look back and say... "I wish it never happened". It really sucked and turned my world upside down. Not to mention it was incredibly painful. But it did happen and I take responsibility for it. On the contrary, I have been given an opportunity to overcome it, grow as a person, and develop stronger interdependence in my closest relationships. That is an opportunity I am thankful for. I have had some incredible support along the way and look forward to continued gains in my wrist and mental strength. See you in 3 weeks for another update!
